EYBL – 1993. Khimki. Third stage17 march 2007

The second game for Khimki in the first day took the home team to the third stage of the EYBL with a no-less resounding victory. After the match against Latgale of Riga, they took on a more dangerous opponent, also from that same city, the BC Spars (Ventspils): 67-39 (7-14, 22-8, 19-14, 3-19). Once again Moscow Region team Captain Yuri Karpenko, thundered on court, as did the awesome playmaker, Sergat Annaev…

Karpenko scored a total 24 points, matching but one other athlete on Khimki’s team. This time around, Sergat scored only 2 points; however he led the team with authority, making 6 assists, 5 steals, and 6 rebounds. Half of his passes were dealt to Karpenko, who followed through seamlessly with inside shots.

When this two-man combo joined forces the yellow-n-blues lead took off, despite the fact the opponent was winning at game’s start. However, in the second quarter, Khimki adjusted their tempo and stole the initiative, leaving the opponent lacking in the ability to retake their position.

Coach for the BC Spars, Raitas SILARAIS:

— Before arriving at Khimki out team suffered a flu epidemic, leaving 50 % of my lead players bed ridden. We had to bring in our reserves, which are younger. Now it will be more difficult for us to fight for a place in the Super Final.

— IT is the first time in this city as a coach. Thanks to the great organization and the wonderful stadium, it is a pleasure to play here. I have been in many European cities, and know what I am talking about. Now, as an athlete, I remember 25 years back I played in the Novator Sports Complex, and since then, yes, there have been a lot of changes.

BC Khimki Coach Alexander VASILKOV:

— After the first game the boys were tired, of course, which is why we lax in the first quarter. We later made some adjustments, arming ourselves… and we won… I am happy with my boys’ performance. We were able to play wisely, more or less the best way we could. The opponent couldn’t withstand the pressure for so long. We had a wide bench, while the Latvian boys were simply unable to gain strength.
