Russian Championship. More precision long distance shot16 october 2006

Khimki played the third match in the regular round in Surgut. The team coaches knew that winnning the Championship Silver would be an excellent upper for everyone, but the mental confidence in victory played a heavy trick on the Moscow Region Club’s players. In the defense, for example, both teams scored no less than half their attempts from the perimeter. Fortunately for the visiting team, especially Savkov (5/8), they were lucky and won: 92-83 (27-26, 22-20, 20-20, 23-17). The upcoming match in the National Championship will finally play out at home when on Tuesday, 24 October Khimki will host the match on its own turf at the Mowcow Region Basketball Center, against Lokomotiv Rostov. Game time is 19.00 hours.

The best scorers: Booker (20), Savkov (18), Fridzon (11), Wolkowiski, Torres and Podkolzin (with 9 each).

In the last match of the “Far Eastern” bout, Khimki missed out once again on having Ademola Okulaja in its starting line up, remaining as the extra foreigner out. Meanwhile, Boris Gorenc formed part of the 12, though not as part of the starting line up. At the tip off: Booker, Fridzon, Torres, Mozgov, Wolkowiski.

Locals quickly took the lead: 7-2; former Khimki player, Denis Ershov, scored, coming up on the break, but the student’s advantage came to a full halt when soon up, the Moscow Region boys started to rack up 3-pointers.

With 3.37 minutes to the first siren, Wolkowiski, got up in on Ershov, scoring and forcing a foul. It became a distance-shot game, and the scoreboard levelled out at an even: 18-18. The visiting team’s coaches switched four players, leaving the court with Torres, who reeled out three fouls in 10 minutes. The yellow-blues, for the first time came out on top after a shot by Podkolzin, but reaching the end of the quarter the teams were head to head again. After a short break Gianmarco Pozzecco scored two 3-pointers back-to-back, but the opponent was not about to let Khimki get too far ahead.

At almost the same instant that the halftime siren blew, Silantiev scored a 3-pointer, unleashing the Surgut artillerary. After the break, under directives, Ershov thundered some 3-pointers, followed by Grachev. Only Shevel missed twice in that cut. The home team once again was on top, but five points over was all it took to wake up the visiting team. Booker and Diatchok hit the court. After Gorenc’s hoop and a long distance hit by Fridzon, Sergey Olhov was forced to call a time-out; his team down 61-69.

The end of the quarter belonged to Universitet, however, and just into the final quarter the Moscow Region team’s lead had been whittled down to 3 points (a narrow margin compared to previous games, where the lead averaged 30 points). At this point Ershov, had surpassed the dozen in both points and rebounds. The game, without a defense and after a time-out, continued.

At this point -fortunately for the whole Moscow Region team — Savkov, netted two consecutive shots from the outside. With 2.16 minutes to go til game’s end, the home team’s coaches asked for a minute, needing to iron out the deficit of 8 points. Booker’s shot coming up on the last minute settled the score. The second victory in a total of three games got the spirits high and flying for the yellow-blues.
