Barcelona hands reins to Alonso
FC Barcelona Lassa found a new head coach in Sito Alonso, who inked a two-year deal with the Spanish powerhouse on Friday. Barcelona keeps an option to extend the deal until the end of the 2018-19 season.
Alonso, age 41, arrives from Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, to which he led to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague playoffs last season. Alonso helped Baskonia finish seventh at the end of the new, round-robin regular season record with a 17-13 record, losing against CSKA Moscow in the playoffs. He also helped Baskonia reach the Spanish League and the Copa del Rey semifinals. He spent the previous two seasons at the helm for Bilbao Basket, posting an 11-5 record in the EuroCup in the 2015-16 season, and the previous three at Gipuzkoa Basket. Alonso has another season of previous previous experience in the EuroLeague, having coached DKV Joventut Badalona to a 4-6 record in the 2008-09 season. He also led Joventut to an 8-4 record in the next season's /DAYS EuroCup. As an assistant coach, Alonso was EuroCup champion with Joventut in 2008. Alonso replaces Georgios Bartzokas on the Barcelona bench.
