Fresh off a good Eurocup debut that ended just one win short of the elimination rounds, CAI Zaragoza returns to the competition with renewed ambitions for the 2014-15 season.
A last-second home loss against Besiktas Integral Forex Istanbul stopped Zaragoza in the Last 32 but the team bounced back by reaching the Spanish League playoffs. Basket Zaragoza was founded in 2002 to compete in the Spanish second division. It followed the success of Club Baloncesto Zaragoza, which reached the 1991 Saporta Cup final and won Copa del Rey titles in 1984 and 1990 but folded for financial reasons in 1996. Basket Zaragoza won the 2007-08 second division to reach the Spanish elite, fell back to the Spanish second division a year later, only to be promoted again for good. Zaragoza finally had a quiet 2010-11 season in the Spanish League and finished 10th overall. With head coach Jose Luis Abos always leading the team, everything clicked in the 2012-13 season as Zaragoza stormed into the Copa del Rey quarterfinals and the Spanish League playoffs for the first time in club history. Moreover, Zaragoza knocked off Valencia Basket in the Spanish playoffs quarterfinals after a 122-120, triple-overtime win in Game 2 to tie the series before downing its opponents by 77-83 in do-or-die Game 3 behind 19 points from Michael Roll. Real Madrid stopped Zaragoza in the semifinals, but the club qualified to the 2013-14 Eurocup, getting prestigious wins and tough losses which should make the team stronger and more experienced in the 2014-15 season.
