Turkish Airlines EuroLeague runner-up Olympiacos Piraeus kept one of it core pieces by re-signing point guard Vangelis Mantzaris to a three-year deal, the club announced Friday.
Mantzaris (1.94 meters, 27 years old) has been with the Reds since 2011, when as a rookie starter he helped the team win the first of back-to-back EuroLeague titles. A well-regrded defender on of one of the continent's best defensive teams, Mantzaris has started in 144 of his 152 EuroLeague appearances for the Reds since his his debut six seasons ago. He was the only Olympiacos player to start the maximum 37 EuroLeague games last season, during which he averaged 5.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists, in helping the team all the way to the championship game. A member of Greek's new golden generation, Mantzaris earned gold medals at the 2008 U18 and 2009 U20 European Championships and silvers at the 2009 World U19 and 2010 U20 European Championships. He has been a regular with the senior Greek national team in recent summers. Mantzaris started his career with Peristeri, where he got his first professional minutes as a 17-year old and played for four years before joining Olympiacos.
