VTB United League
Back from injury in time to lead Khimki to a rivalry win vs. Loko, Alexey Shved was once again the star of the show. Following the game, he gave an exclusive interview to VTB-League.com about his decision to play, his coach’s instructions, new teammates, and Khimki’s “Russian 5”.
– You only recently returned from injury. How many practices did you have with the team prior to this game?
– I only practiced twice with the team. I started practicing with the ball about a week ago.

– When did you realize you could play today?
– Once the team got back from Madrid. I practiced one day and realized that my leg didn’t hurt too bad and I felt great.

– If today’s opponent hadn’t been Loko, but instead a non-contender, would you have played?
– Naturally, I would have played. It’s my physical condition and readiness that matters, not the opponent. If I’m ready to play, expect to see me on the court.

– Did you have a limit on the number of minutes today?
– No. Why didn’t I enter the game until the 2nd quarter? That’s what the coach decided.

– Alexey, did you miss basketball?
– Of course, I didn’t touch a ball for almost two months. That’s a long time for a basketball player.

– What were Dusko Ivanovic’s instructions today?
– He didn’t want me to force shots and wanted me to be active on offense and help move the ball. I think I managed to do that.

– There were two elements to the 4th quarter: Khimki’s excellent defense and how you took control several times. Which had more of an impact?
– It wouldn’t be right to single out one thing in this situation. Both factors played a decisive role in the win.

– E.J. Rowland, Justin Carter, Nobel Boungou Colo: In your opinion, which of Khimki’s new foreigners have fit in best?
– I think it’s still early to talk about that. The season has only started and there’s still time to get in peak condition.

– Ivanovic often uses a Russian lineup. What are its strengths?
– Its Russian soul! (laughs)

– 21 points, several big baskets, and an important win. Is this what you expected from your return?
– To be honest, I really missed basketball! I didn’t think about scoring a lot of points. I wanted to help the team get a win. But I’m happy that my return turned out this way.
