Lietuvos Rytas turned to former player Janis Blums to bring scoring ability and experience to its backcourt by signing the veteran guard for the coming season. The sides agreed to terms on a contract for two seasons. Blums (1.90 meters, 30 years old) helped Rytas to the Eurocup title game and a Baltic League title when he played for the club in 2006-07.
He arrives from Gescrap Bilbao, where Blums has spent the past four seasons. Last season Blums averaged 6 points in 17 Turkish Airlines Euroleague games in reaching the playoffs in his and the team’s first season in Europe’s premier competition. He was also worth 5.7 points per game in the Spanish League. During his time with Bilbao, Blums helped the Men in Black reach back to back Eurocup semifinals in 2009 and 2010. He had played in five difference countries before finding a home in Bilbao. Blums started his career in 2000 with Broceni and then Skonto in his native Latvia. He left for Poland one season with Anwil Wloclawek, then returned to Latvia for two more seasons for Ventspils, where he made his Eurocup debut. His next stop was Rytas and then Napoli of Italy, before he joined Bilbao in 2008.
