29 septemberA.D. Vassallo, Asvel Basket

Among the benefits of such intense early-season competition in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds is to see newcomers put to the test right away. One of the players passing his test with flying colors is A.D. Vassallo of Asvel Basket, who is averaging 22.5 points through three games so far. His 29-point breakout Tuesday on the road wasn't enough to keep Asvel from losing Game 1 of the second round to Le Mans, however. On Friday, Asvel will have to win by 11 or more points at home or lose its bid to play in the Euroleague. Vassallo may be young, 24, and from far way, Puerto Rico, but he is not about to let such an opportunity go without a fight. " That's the number one goal right now, for me, my teammates, the staff and the organization," Vassallo said during Asvel's train ride home to Lyon on Wednesday. "Personally, I'd love to say I play in the Euroleague, and to play well, too."

29 septemberBudivelnik BC Khimki — 58 — 87. Game report

BC Khimki Moscow Region struck first in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague second Qualifying Round by thrashing BC Budivelnik 58-87 in Game 1 of their two-way series in Ukraine on Tuesday. Khimki has a 29-point lead the series and hosts Game 2 on Friday.

28 septemberBilly Keys, Budivelnik

If any player knows what it takes to survive the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, it has to be playmaker Billy Keys of Budivelnik, which joins the hunt for a place in Europe's top competition on Tuesday. If Keys and his teammates are successful, they will make Budivelnik the first Ukrainian team in a long time to reach Europe's marquee club competition. In fact, when it had the chance to qualify through preliminary rounds back in 1995, Budivelnik never made it to the Euroleague regular season. Now they have Keys to lead the way. Not only did Keys help Greek club Maroussi through qualifying to the Euroleague regular last year, but the team proved good enough to play the Top 16 and come within a victory of making the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Always hungry and ambitious, Keys is now hoping to rewrite Budivelnik's history, but it all starts with a tough two-game series against Russian giant BC Khimki Moscow Region. Keys is excited about the challenge, as he told Euroleague.net. "If we go out there, and play as a team, as a family, I think this team can have the kind of success Maroussi had last year," Keys said in an interview. "I am excited, really looking forward to it. I can't wait for this season to start."
